2023 Trip Report-Why We Keep Going Back

 Full Trip Report from 2023

From May 20-27, 2023, a group of 20 divers from Atlantic Edge made the trek down to the tiny Caribbean island of Little Cayman for a week of superb diving on the crystal blue Bloody Bay Wall. Little Cayman, know as a sister island of Grand Cayman, is 10 miles long by 1 mile wide. There are less than 200 permanent residents and there is very little commercial development. Most of the island is a protected marine park. On the north side, Bloody Bay Wall and Jackson’s Bight Wall contain over a dozen world class wall diving sites. Our group was able to do 18 dives in 5 days. The average visibility was 100ft and on some days was over 150ft. A typical day included 2 deeper dives in the morning, coming back to the resort for lunch, and a slightly shallower dive in the afternoon. We saw friendly hawksbill turtles and grouper cleaning stations on every dive. On one dive, we spotted a gigantic loggerhead turtle - the largest many divers had ever seen. Nurse sharks, stingrays, and eagle rays were seen by most divers. The Mixing Bowl dive site had abundant numbers of Yellowhead Jawfish, and some divers even found males mouthbrooding eggs! One morning, we headed over to the other sister, Cayman Brac, for a few wreck dives. The wrecks were fascinating, but even better was a Great Barracuda taking time out for a cleaning and to pose for pictures. We had new divers and very experienced divers, and everyone was able to find their comfort zone. Great weather, relatively calm seas, and 80 degree water contributed to the smiles on the boat after each dive.

The diving on Little Cayman was valet-style and couldn’t have been easier. The resort staff handled all the gear - loading tanks, changing tanks, and end-of-day rinsing. It truly felt like a vacation. The resort had buffet style meals with broad food choices - no one went hungry. After the diving was done each day, guests enjoyed a soak in the hot tub or a dip in the pool. Each night, the Beach Nuts bar was a great place to enjoy the included daily drinks.
